An Online College Degree Proves Popular With Military Personnel

Friday, April 30th, 2010
Andy West asked:

Members of the military have been increasingly taking advantage of the online college degree programs in order to move up the ranks and advance their careers in both the military and as civilians. While in the military, an associate’s or bachelor’s degree compliments their military training and adds valuable skills to their traditional training, while a college education looks great on their resume when they retire after they put in their mandatory years of service. With many men and women retiring from the military in their forties, online college degrees give them an education that compliments their military experience perfectly to give them a leg up in the workforce.

Online college degree programs certainly fit the military lifestyle. Why the popularity of an online college instead of a more traditional bricks and mortar school? The most obvious is the convenience of an online education. Military personnel are frequently relocated, but as long as they have access to a computer and an Internet connection they can pursue an education through an online university. In fact, many are taking classes today even while they are deployed in war zones or serving their country overseas.

Since relocation doesn’t affect classes, military students aren’t in danger of falling behind on credits and don’t have to worry about credits transferring. The self-paced nature of many online courses is also ideal. With more leeway during each semester, there is a bit of cushion built in for time needed for transfers or time off for military exercises or other commitments. Required school work can be done around the schedule of each person.

The costs are reasonable for military personnel in online education. There are various GI Bills that cover all or part of the educational costs for members of the military who wish to pursue an advanced degree based on length of service, amount of active duty, branch of service and veteran’s status. The funds allocated by these programs can be used for traditional colleges and universities or a variety of online programs. Since online programs tend to cost less than bricks and mortar universities as a whole, the resulting savings is even greater.

Online colleges are increasingly offering scholarships and grants to individuals who serve in the armed forces or the National Guard and reserve, veterans and their family members as well. These schools are aware of the dedication and high success rate of these students and are eager to enroll them as students; courting them with financial assistance is just one way they look to increase the number of military members they enroll each year.

Many cyber schools offering online college degrees are now members of the Service Members Opportunity College System (SOC), an organization which has 1800 member colleges and universities. These schools encourage the pursuit of college degrees by military personnel by removing stumbling blocks caused by more traditional methods of pursuing a degree. Some ways that SOC schools do this include: minimizing loss or credit for transfers and minimizing duplicate work, limiting or removing residency requirements for military personnel, recognizing national testing programs and or giving credit for out-of-classroom learning and finally giving credit for military experience.

There are now dozens of online colleges in the United States that participate in the SOC program, giving military personnel the chance to obtain an associate’s or bachelor’s degree while they are serving in the military. With so many advantages to pursuing an education online over a more traditional approach, it’s easy to see why more members of the armed forces are taking advantage of online college degree programs every year.

carrnass asked:

Ok, here’s my situation, I graduated from a university and got my masters degree. My masters degree and college degree are business focused. I have always wanted to be in the army and make it a career but my parents would have none of it. I just thought would my college and masters degree count for something and make me an officer (go through officers training) or do I start from private?

Getting A College Degree Online

Monday, April 12th, 2010
Jim Johnson asked:

Pursuing higher education is the goal of many people today as today’s job markets increasingly require more and higher quality education in order to find meaningful employment. When faced with the decision of which college to attend in order to get that needed college degree, the choices can be almost overwhelming. One avenue of higher education that you really should consider however is an online degree.

For many years the only way to get a more advanced degree was by attending traditional brick and mortar colleges and universities that specialize in the field(s) that interests you. The educational landscape has changed dramatically though with the increased acceptance and quality of online schools that can offer the same educational and acedemic benefits while removing many of the hardships and difficulties often associated with attending schools offline.

One of the great benefits of getting your education online is that it allows you to participate in courses that may not be found locally at the colleges that are near you. The internet makes taking any course practical no matter where you live. Another important convenience factor for many is the time commitment needed to succeed in an online school. Many people work full time while pursuing an advanced degree and that can often interfere with a college schedule at traditional schools.

But online schools are more flexible in their course requirements and many find that they can successfully negotiate a full time job with their college workload without undue stress and hardship. If you happen to be a family caretaker the flexibility that an online schools offers can be just what you need to make the pursuit of an advanced degree attainable.

One word of caution however. Be sure that the school you choose online is fully accredited. This way any courses that you complete can be fully transferred as college credits if and when you have to change your curriculum or school. And employers will look much more favorably on an education received from fully accredited schools that have a solid reputation for education excellence.

The type of degree that you can get online is a wide open field including associate, bachelor, master, and even Phd and doctorate degrees. The fields of study also are wide-ranging as well. Generally, if you can get a degree in a particular field of study offline, you can pretty much count on being able to accomplish the same program online too.

So when looking to advance your education don’t limit yourself to just the offline schools. Give serious consideration to online higher and advanced education too, and it may be just what you need to get the college degree that you really want.

So You Wanna Have a College Degree Do Ya?

Thursday, April 8th, 2010
Arch Mcnab asked:

You come out of the front door of the house trailing drips of coffee and loose scraps of paper leaving the kid’s screams and the wife’s ‘be careful honey’ in your wake. Juggling everything you struggle to open the door of the rust heap that you charitably call ‘the ride’. Once inside you realize that you have left the keys dangling in the keylock. No problem you think as you unwind the window thinking to yourself that well, at least it isn’t a power window so you don’t have to drag your sorry butt out of the car. As the window gives a little jerk and then a thud that announces with a certain finality that, yes its off its track, you realize the futility of congratulating yourself on anything today.

“Today is a Monday, today is a Monday”, squeak the protesting windshield wipers as you move from the center of the street closer to the edge trying to avoid the road spray of passing cars who seem to instinctively know that your driver’s side window won’t roll up. Somehow the fact that it’s almost March seems to make your wet left arm even colder and you idly wonder if it’s possible to get pneumonia through a soggy forearm. Luckily there’s a parking spot down at the far end of the lot, well past the paved section but then if you’re five minutes late, you have to take what is left.

Five minutes late!! How could you possibly be five minutes late? You break into a run for the door, ignoring the searing pain in your ankle as you twist it on the broken edge of the pavement, hoping against hope that you can slip in and make it to your work station undetected. You’re halfway down the hallway before a head thrusts out and you’re trapped in the beady gaze of the shift supervisor. He deigns to say anything, just turns his nose high and sniffs disdainfully, but you can be sure that your tardiness has been duly recorded and your meager pay-stub will reflect the gaffe.

Now totally rattled, feeling a little subdued and a lot out of breath from your little wind sprint across the parking lot, you grab your chipped coffee mug and totter down to the pot. As usual, in the coffee pot, there is a new miracle of physics on display. How, you wonder, is it possible to leave so little coffee in the pot and still not feel that it’s somehow time to put on a new pot? Surely, anyone with half a brain can see that there isn’t enough coffee left to fill even a small thimble sized expresso cup. Just then the half-a-brain that you were visualizing skips by the door stopping briefly to announce in self-justifying tones that if they hadn’t put on a fresh pot because, you see, the old one wasn’t all gone.

Minutes later you’re back at your desk, head in your hands, eyes squeezed shut you’re trying to visualize somewhere warm and tropical to soothe the sudden migraine you feel coming on when your door is assaulted by a rapping resembling a red cockaded woodpecker on steroids. The grim faced door rapper disgorges the entire contents of his message in a machine-gun burst.

Boss wants to see you in his office in fifteen minutes sharp!! Don’t be late!

Now your stomach really starts to churn, making you wish that, yes indeed, you had taken the time to have breakfast this morning and that you weren’t stuck in this dead end job and that yes, you had stayed on in school and gone to college with all of your buddies. After all, it seemed as though they had all done well, none of them working in this sweatshop like yours truly drawing down a salary rivaling that of pimply faced mickdee’s rep, you realize grimly.

Leaving your work station, you notice on the computer monitor loaded with the day’s drivel that passes for news, a tiny little box with one of those annoying ‘click here’ logos. You squint at it, trying to make out the blurry words that would be so much clearer if you hadn’t left your glasses on the bathroom counter at home and wonder if those words are the answer to your problems. ‘Get your college degree online!’ proclaims the info box nestled between late breaking news related to Cher’s surgery abuse and claims about Brad’s fidelity or lack thereof. Could you really do this? You, the guy that every neighbor loves to have on his street, just so they can always feel superior to someone.

But how would it all play out if you did what the your old guidance counselor suggested? What if you did suddenly apply for an online college degree? And even more dizzying, what if you went out and got it? Now your mind is in hyper-drive, imagining that day when you can swagger on down the hall, so unlike the little journey you’re about to embark upon now, and tell that little pinched faced desk dweller exactly what you think of him, his job, and your “promising career of creating plastic molds for fish-ponds.

Hey, hang on. You’re not going to let that career ending thought take over your mind. Not today. Today was shaping up to be one of those days that really made a person stop and take stock. Not that there was a lot of stock to take, in fact very little at all, truth be told. If you had stayed in school and gone on to university or even college then things would be oh so different. Well they would, wouldn’t they? Sure they would, your mind answers back. And it’s not too late, in fact if those claims by these online schools were true, in just a few short years you could really be graduating with one of many online college degrees. It all sounded just a little bit too good to be true, but still you file that away in your mind as you head down the hall, footsteps dragging ever slower, rivaling those of the chained monster in a B movie…….to be continued….

Earn a College Degree Online and Get Career Success

Sunday, April 4th, 2010
Andy West asked:

Today’s job market is more competitive than ever and many people earn a college degree online to ensure they won’t be left behind. In many ways, a degree is like a high school diploma thirty years ago, and to earn a college degree online is an option that makes the most sense for many people.

People pursue the journey to earn a college degree online for many reasons. Many people see the advantage of earning the degree, but have never enjoyed the classroom setting. Listening to classroom lectures can seem like a waste of time, especially if you have to learn class material through readings as well as doing homework. Sometimes it makes more sense to learn the material on your own instead of burning precious time in a classroom, in addition to commuting to campus. For others, there is no physical campus within a reasonable distance offering the major or degree they are interested in.

One of the largest demographics that seek to earn online degrees is middle-aged people. Many middle-aged people who decide to earn a college degree online are not able to attend day classes, and night classes take them away from their family. For many, obtaining a college degree leads to a raise, promotion, or even allows them to begin a new career.

A big advantage of programs that offer individuals the option to earn a college degree online is that you are not tied down to a schedule like students who attend a physical campus. Because the information is online, you can download class information and complete readings and homework at whatever time is most convenient for you. You will never miss a class because of an unexpected obligation or lose attendance points because of circumstances that are beyond your control. Online programs give you the opportunity to control your schedule and do things at your own pace, on your own time. Many students excel in this type of educational setting.

Because the number of people who earn a college degree online is rising and the practice is becoming so common, a degree from many online institutions is just as prestigious as acquiring a degree from a traditional college or university with a physical campus. Employers feel that a degree, regardless of where or how it was earned, is a degree and shows a lot of commitment to furthering your education, improving yourself, and demonstrates that you have the dedication that will likely make you a promising employee.

Employers also respect the fact that it takes an extraordinary amount of discipline to earn an online degree since there is no teacher or other students to help keep you motivated. Since most online learning experiences do not provide a set structure or schedule, earning this degree means that the person has learned effective time management skills and has likely juggled many responsibilities because of their drive to further themselves.

However, a lot of people contemplate the decision to continue their education this way for quite a while before they take the plunge. People are reluctant to seek a degree for many reasons, but most wish they already had the degree they dream about. For some, there is other time or financial obligations holding them back. Many people claim they can’t afford a college degree because they have to support their family, but most people in that situation can’t afford not to. Continuing their education will help get them out of the paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle that so many families are trapped in. Parents in hand-to-mouth situation realize how dangerous the situation can be, but it is difficult to break the cycle. Fortunately, financial aid is available and can be quite generous for non-traditional students, especially parents.

The route to earn a college degree online isn’t for everyone, but it allows many people to earn a college degree who could not do so otherwise. For these people, online learning opportunities provide a better lifestyle for themselves and their families, as well as a sense of achievement.
