Is a Masters Degree really important for most jobs?

I was talking to a friend of mine who is extremely intelligent. He told me that for almost any career these days, a specific Masers Degree is extremely important. I am very close to getting my Bachelors Degree and have no plans in going for my masters. I plan to be a technical writer, or editor, or some sort of writing career.

But it seems crazy to me that a Masters Degree would be that important in pretty much any field. Is what he is saying true?
